Mpumelelo from Book Ibhoni (Book A Bicycle), who is the LeadSA hero for the month and Simnikiwe from the Citizen, talk about drives that they have started to encourage more South Africans to read books. Book Ibhoni gives bicycle tours in Soweto around Orlando, and give discounts on their prices when you donate a book, and the books are then donated to needy libraries. Simnikiwe - alongside her colleague Amanda - are in the process of starting a reading drive to Grade 4s in communities and are calling for volunteers from NGOs and publishing houses to donate books that young children in South Africa can relate to for reading sessions.

The team discusses unconventional careers again, in keeping with the educational theme for the month of January. Studio guests Chef Pelo and Kananelo Pooe share their respective career paths of the culinary arts and photography with us.

We had phenomenal women in studio with us, who dared to venture into the uncommon careers of Somatology, Tourism and Culinary skills. An in-depth look into the education crisis following dismal results from the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) Report of 2016. The PIRLS report was published in the first week of December 2017, and it indicated that almost 80% of Grade 4 school learners cannot read with comprehension.
