  1. IRS officer Sameer Wankhede today moved the Bombay high court in the alleged ₹25 crore extortion case regarding the arrest of Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan. In his appeal, Wankhede said the CBI's action against him is an act of revenge. He said the FIR was filed against him because he had lodged a complaint against Gyaneshwar Singh for humiliating him over caste. He further said that Gyaneshwar Singh is helping Aryan Khan get off the hook in the drug case.
  2. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Hiroshima today to attend the G7 summit. Modi said that "It will be a pleasure to meet Prime Minister (Fumio) Kishida again after his recent visit to India for the India-Japan Summit. My presence in this G7 Summit is particularly meaningful as India holds the G20 Presidency this year,". He added "I look forward to exchanging views with the G7 countries and other invited partners on challenges the world faces and the need to collectively address them,".
  3. Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and K.V. Viswanathan took the oath of office to bring the strength of the court to 34 judges. They would replace Justices Dinesh Maheshwari and M.R. Shah, both of whom had retired. Succeeding Justice J.B. Pardiwala, Justice Viswanathan would be in line to be the 58th Chief Justice of India in August 2030.
  4. On May 16, magistrate judge Jacqueline Chooljian of the US district court of the central district of California issued an order stating Tahawwur Rana should be extradited to India. Responding to the development, foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said “Insofar as the question of Tahawwur Rana is concerned, we are in very regular touch with the US authorities to ensure that there is speedy and early extradition of Tahawwur Rana,” Rana is currently lodged in a federal lockup in Los Angeles and he can appeal against the California court’s order in a circuit court. The US judge had ruled Rana’s extradition to India under the extradition treaty between India and the US.

  1. Joe Biden has postponed his trip to Australia, for Quad summit, due to debt ceiling negotiations in Washington. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the leaders of Australia, the United States, India and Japan would instead meet at the G7 in Hiroshima this weekend. A bilateral programme in Sydney with Prime Minister Narendra Modi could still go ahead next week, he added.
  2. Reacting to the release of US State Department 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom, Ministry Of External Affairs Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi said, "We are aware of the release of the U.S. State Department 2022 Report on International Religious Freedom. Regrettably, such reports continue to be based on misinformation and flawed understanding.' The US Religious Freedom Report 2022 alleged high handedness against minorities especially Muslims by various state governments in India.
  3. As Western nations move to tighten sanctions on Moscow's energy sector, EU Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrell had earlier said that the EU should crack down on India reselling Russian oil as refined fuels including diesel into Europe. Responding to these remarks, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said "Look at EU Council regulations, Russian crude is substantially transformed in the third country and not treated as Russian anymore."
  4. Bushra Khan, the wife of Pakistan's former PM Imran Khan, was granted protective bail in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case. Al-Qadir Trust is a non-governmental welfare organization set up by Bushra and Imran Khan in 2018 when he was still in office. Government officials alleged that Khan and his wife received land worth millions of dollars as a bribe from a real estate tycoon through the charitable trust. The trust has nearly 60 acres of land worth $24.7 million and another large piece of land in Islamabad close to Khan's hilltop home.

  1. Pakistan's former Prime Minister Imran Khan has said that the country's military establishment intended to keep him behind bars for the next 10 years under sedition charges. He further said the "plan now" was to humiliate him by putting his wife, Bushra Begum, in jail. To let you know, Khan's arrest by the Pakistan Rangers at the Islamabad High Court premises last week triggered unrest in Pakistan. According to Pakistan police, the death toll in clashes was 10 while Khan's party PTI claimed that its 40 workers died in the firing by Pakistan's security forces.
  2. In the Aryan Khan drugs case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said that two independent witnesses - Kiran Gosavi and Prabhakar Sail had planned to extort Rs 25 crore from Khan who was arrested on charges of alleged possession of narcotic substances in 2021. Of the amount, Sameer Wankhede was supposed to get some, according to Sail. The FIR further also alleged that Wankhede has not "properly explained his foreign visits and had mis-declared the expenditure on his foreign travels".
  3. Cyclone Mocha killed at least three people, injured 13 and damaged more than 1,000 buildings in western Myanmar. More than 850 houses, 64 schools, 14 health facilities and seven communication towers were damaged by the storm, a local news channel said. Bangladesh has also faced devastation due to the cyclone. According to a Bangladeshi official, 12,000 houses were destroyed in Cox's Bazar and it also damaged crops, uprooted trees, and tore through hundreds of shelters housing Rohingya refugees. Some northeastern parts of India continue to face threats from the storm.
  4. Telangana Minister KT Rama Rao announced that Taiwanese electronics contract manufacturer, Foxconn, will invest $500 million in Telangana. He announced that a new plant will be situated at Kongar Kalaan in Telangana and the investment is expected to create over 25,000 direct jobs in the state in the first phase. This year, Foxconn reportedly won the order to manufacture Airpods for Apple and the company was planning to set up a plant in India for manufacturing the same.

In the backdrop of state elections in Karnataka, replying to M Mallikarjun Kharge's 'venomous snake' barb at him, PM said "snake is the charm of lord Shankar's (Shiva) neck, and for me, the people of the country are the form of Lord Eshwar, they are the form of Shiva. So I'm fine with being the snake that adorns the neck of the people". The PM was addressing a public meeting in Kolar, Karnataka.
  2. West Bengal Congress leader and counsel of the Calcutta High Court Kaustav Bagchi wrote a letter to express displeasure over Congress leader and Supreme Court advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi defending Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee in the supreme court. Bagchi claimed that Bengal Congress leaders and workers feel ashamed of Singhvi.

Delhi Public Works Department Minister Atishi wrote to Delhi lieutenant governor Vinai Kumar Saxena and criticized the letter he sent to the chief secretary seeking records of the renovation of chief minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence and submitting the report in 15 days. Atishi said that LG seeks to exercise a power that is wholly outside the jurisdiction and authority of his office.

According to the US media, leaked US intelligence documents reveal that junior Foreign Minister of Pakistan Hina Rabbani Khar cautioned Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif that Pakistan should avoid giving the impression of "appeasing" the West. The reports further say that Pak no longer should attempt to maintain a middle ground between China and the US. It says the partnership with the US would ultimately sacrifice the full benefits of its "real strategic" partnership with China.
  5. United States regulators have declared that First Republic Bank has been seized and a deal agreed to sell it to JPMorgan Chase, which will take $173 billion of loans and about $30 billion of securities of First Republic Bank including $92 billion of deposits. The deal makes it the third major U.S. bank to fail in two months.

  1. At the Republic Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that "for the first time, the poor have got security and dignity". Speaking on MUDRA yojana, the PM said, "It was started to give financial support to Micro and Small entrepreneurs. Under this scheme, more than 40 crore loans were disbursed, and out of this 70% were women. The first impact of this yojana is an increase in self-employment."
  2. In a shocking incident in Kerala's Thrissur, an eight years old girl lost her life to a mobile explosion while she was watching a video on her mobile phone. Initial reports suggest that the phone was a Chinese company brand.
  3. Grammy-winning rapper Pras Michel was convicted of federal offences for money laundering and acting as an unregistered agent of China. He funnelled money from an alleged China-based Malaysian financier, through donors to Barack Obama's 2012 reelection campaign. During the Trump administration, he was also trying to quash a Justice Department investigation and influence extradition on behalf of China.
  4. India's Reliance's Viacom18 has struck a deal with Warner Bros Discovery for streaming Hollywood content on its JioCinema platform. This will bring HBO Original, Max Original and Warner Bros. Television content to the JioCinema platform. It is important to note that the JioCinema is digitally streaming the world's biggest and most popular cricket league - Indian Premier League(IPL) for free in India.
  5. Australia will overhaul its immigration system to speed up getting skilled workers into the country and smoothening the path to permanent residency. The federal government has said the current points test system will be modified to identify people with the right skill sets. The government said that Temporary skilled visa holders will be able to apply for permanent residency by the end of this year.
