Jason is an African-American gay man living with HIV. In this episode, we will highlight Jason’s quest for acceptance within himself, family and community. Jason came to New York from Louisville, Kentucky, destitute and broken down by his HIV + status. He was attracted to NYC’s favorable conditions for comprehensive HIV/AIDS resources and social acceptance. Soon after his arrival, Jason found himself homeless and hopeless. Today, Jason is in good health and a successful community organizer, focusing on empowering low-income people affected by HIV/AIDS to stand up to stigma, fear, discrimination, and homophobia that may place many African Americans at higher risk for HIV. As one of the ~ 460,000 African-Americans living with HIV/AIDS in the United States, Jason has the kind of HIV + success story that perhaps shines within the African American community.

Morty Newburgh is a NYC attorney in practice at his own firm with a substantial LGBTQ practice since 1985. He is also the former President of LeGaL The LGBT Bar Association of New York In this episode, we will talk about one of his most significant HIV/AIDS related litigation and the trial’s expert witness, Mathilde Krim, Ph.D., who was a medical researcher and the founding chairman of amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research. We will also explore what it was like for Morty to practice law in the LGBTQ community with many of his clients dying, and what it was like to live through the incomprehensible loss of so many friends and colleagues.
